(4) ARCHITECTS LEAVING YOU MESSAGES?
Don’t be surprised if you start getting calls from local
architects! A national awareness program has begun among the EBP
representatives and the architects in their regions. Touting the
benefits of working with Certified Roofers, such as the
beneficial Extended Warranties, your next lead might just be
from that architectural firm around the corner from you.
(5) TAKE HEED OF THE HEAT
Keep your job sites rolling safely and productively during the
dog days of summer.
According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and
Health (NIOSH), the frequency of accidents is higher in hot
environments. Lower mental alertness and physical performance
brought on by excessive heat and a corresponding increase in
body temperature and physical discomfort can cause some
individuals to overlook safety procedures or to divert their
attention from the tasks at hand. Be alert and stay safe!
Watch out for:
A. Heat Stroke
The most serious health problem when working in hot weather,
where basically, sweating becomes inadequate and the body’s
regulatory system fails.
Telltale signs:
• Hot, dry, red or spotted skin • Body temperature of 1050F
(40.50C) or higher
• Victim is confused, delirious • May have convulsions or be
unconscious
Take action!
• Call 9-1-1, an individual with these symptoms must be
hospitalized immediately.
• Place the victim in a cool area, soak the clothes with water,
and fan the person to help cool him.
B. Heat Exhaustion
Caused by the loss of large amounts of fluid by sweating, the
symptoms are similar to heat stroke.
Telltale signs:
• Sweat • Extreme weakness or fatigue
• Giddiness, nausea, and/or headache • Vomiting or loss of
consciousness may occur
• Clammy, moist, pale, flushed complexion • Body temperature is
normal or slightly elevated
Take action!
• Victim should rest in a cool place and drink plenty of
liquids.
Note: Mild cases will recover quickly, while more serious ones
may take several days and extended care.
C. Fainting
Common in those not accustomed to working in hot environments,
the individual should lie down in a cool place to recover.
Moving around, and avoiding standing immobile for long periods
of time will help prevent fainting.
Avoiding Heat-Induced Disorders
Train your crews to recognize the early signs of
heat stress. DON’T IGNORE THEM!
• Shorten the work / rest cycles – take more frequent but
shorter breaks in cool areas.
• Drink ½ to 1 cup (150 ml to 250 ml) of fluid every 15 to 20
minutes to replace the sweat lost during the day.
(8 to 12 L or 2 to 3 gal of sweat can be produced by 1 worker
every day).
• Good nutrition and adequate sleep are also important factors
in the prevention of heat related illnesses.
Take the time – educate yourself and your workers about the ways
to minimize heat stress.
(6) PEER PROFILE…BORETSKI ENTERPRISES INC.
Are you still debating the benefits of selling BP shingle
Extended Warranties?
Need some cold, hard proof? How does an 80% closing rate when
offering BP Extended Warranties sound? Like business as usual
according to Mark Winter, Business Manager for Boretski Roofing
in Belleville Ontario. Winter says: “… the majority of jobs
slated for this season have signed on with us because of the
extended warranty. It differentiates [Boretski] from the
competition.”
Keep in mind that for every warranty sold at $150 to a
homeowner, $75 of that is clear profit for your company.
“When talking to a homeowner who is going to spend an average of
$5000.00 for a new Harmony laminate roof, an additional $150 for
that extra 5 years of full coverage is a drop in the bucket. I
tell them they have to take it; whether a first time homeowner,
or a retired couple, it only makes good sense,” says Mark.
Owned and operated by Tom Boretski, who founded the company in
1981, his 6 man team has built a sound reputation based almost
exclusively on referrals due to their quality workmanship and
full offering of BP products.
Installing over 17 000 bundles every season, from 3-tabs to
high-end laminates such as Eclipse, Boretski Enterprises is the
forerunner among BP Certified Roofers throughout Canada.
Think you can catch ‘em?
