(1) BUILDING GREEN WITH EXCEL II SHEATHING

  • Construction + Renovation + Demolition industries = 25% of waste in Quebec;
  • 90% is recyclable and/or reusable, according to Recyc-Quebec.

Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) a precedent setting, environmentally friendly retail store decided to build a 45,000 ft2 (4,180 m2) store in September, 2002, at Montreal’s Marché Central, with a twist.

The first of its kind in the province, this green building, as all others constructed using the same guidelines, must exceed the MNECB (Model National Energy Code for Buildings) and ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers) Standard 90.1, by a minimum of 50%. Four months after the May 2003 opening, this particular building surpasses the minimum by 15%, therefore measuring 65% superior efficiency as of the last evaluation.

According to the CANMET Energy Technology Centre, located in Ottawa:

"...The emphasis of the [NRCan C-2000] program is on energy performance and water conservation, but...also...site ecology and improved levels of indoor environmental quality."

Design, materials, systems – every aspect was researched in-depth, and green building principles maintained.

Examples of the progressive systems implemented are:
  • The incorporation of geothermal energy with a radiant heating/cooling system The 1st of its kind in Canada and the subject of a Hydro-Quebec study.
  • The reuse or recycling of 70% of salvaged building materials that would, under normal circumstances, be destined for landfills.

Eco-friendly Excel IITM Sheathing was selected as the main component of the building envelope. This
sheathing is made of natural wood fibres recovered from the lumber industry, and is bound together with cornstarch. Excel II maximizes energy efficiency by:

1) Increasing the effective thermal insulation at a rate of R-3 /inch; and
2) Reducing air leaks with its integrated air barrier.

The air barrier also has water repellent properties while yielding high water vapour permeance thus improving the drying capability of the wall cavity.

Ninety-nine percent natural, EX II is free of VOC’s, pantane, formaldehyde, and all other compounds that contain ozone-depleting CFC- or HCFC-type chlorofluorocarbons. It is fully recyclable.

More than one thousand panels measuring 1” x 4’ x 8’ were used on the MEC’s Montreal location.

(2) TORCH FREE ELASTOMERIC (SBS) MEMBRANES IN GRANBY

Sixty-five thousand square feet of roof, 30,000 pounds of Type III asphalt, and over 1,000 rolls of BP TORCH-FREE cap and base sheets, this particular six week job for Toitures Yvon Ouellet Inc. in Granby, Quebec, is scheduled for completion early October.

Exorbitant insurance costs for any heat-welded roof application, not to mention ensuring worker safety, narrowed the choice of roofing to a 2-ply mopped SBS application.

The BP products used, that weigh approximately 2 lbs / ft2, carry a 10-year warranty at the base. Warranty options include 10 year material and labour for $0.06/ft2. Nine cents per square foot covers the material and labour for a premium 15 years from the date of completion!
